Q. Are trans fats bad for you?
A. Recent studies have linked trans fatty acids to serious health problems such as Heart Disease, Diabetes and Alzheimer's. A comprehensive National Academy of Sciences (NAS) study concluded that trans fat raises LDL blood cholesterol (so-called bad cholesterol) which is directly linked to increased risk of coronary heart disease and decreases the HDL (good cholesterol). Both Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have taken the position that the intake of trans fatty acids should be as low as possible.
